Abstract

La Sezione per la conservazione e il restauro dei manufatti in pelle e cuoio dell'ICR raccoglie in questo volume i dati più significativi sui materiali di intervento impiegati nella conservazione del cuoio dorato e dipinto.

La selezione dei materiali è avvenuta attraverso un esame critico della letteratura, tanto quella più specifica quanto quella più generale ma in grado di fornire elementi di un certo interesse riferibili alla tipologia dei manufatti in esame. I dati, aggiornati al 1995, sono proposti in una serie di 60 schede con informazioni tecnico scientifiche sui prodotti impiegati nei principali laboratori di restauro, scelti secondo i seguenti criteri: - materiali risultati idonei al termine di test che ne hanno valutato le caratteristiche di invecchiamento e le modalità di applicazione; -  materiali per i quali non si sono riscontrate controindicazioni  e il cui uso si è affermato nel tempo; - materiali sperimentali di cui è stata rilevata l'efficacia o comunque le possibili prospettive d'impiego; -  materiali dismessi perché non idonei o perché fuori produzione, ma che – per essere stati adoprati nel tempo con una certa continuità – facilmente oggi sono divenuti, o potrebbero divenire, elemento costitutivo di un manufatto.

Ogni scheda è articolata in quattro sezioni:  - identificazione (del prodotto); - caratteristiche chimico-fisiche; - impiego; - informazioni tossicologiche.

Per la comprensione delle voci e dei parametri contenuti nelle schede è stata redatta un Guida alle schede e due brevi glossari  attinenti uno agli interventi e uno ai danni tipici, corredati di riproduzioni fotografiche esemplificative.

 

 

The ICR Section for the conservation and restoration of skin and leather artefacts collects in this volume the most significant data on treatment materials used in gilt leather conservation.

The selection was made through a critical examination both of the specific literature and of more general works that could provide elements of a certain interest in relation with the typology of  these artefacts. The information published here is current as of 1995, and is given in a series of 60 forms with technical and scientific information on the products used in the main conservation laboratories.  The data were chosen according to the following criteria: - materials found to be suitable after tests to evaluate their aging characteristics and application methods;  - materials that have been commonly employed for some time and not found to have counter-indications; - experimental materials that have been found to be efficacious or at least to have some potential application; - materials that have been discarded as unsuitable or that are no longer produced, but which - having been used with some continuity  - could easily have become a constituent part of  artefacts.

Every form is divided  into four sections: - identification (of the material); - chemical and physical characteristics; - use; - toxicological information.

For the comprehension of the terms  and parameters used in the forms, a 'Guide to the Forms' and two glossaries, referring to treatments and to typical forms of damages , were compiled.
